The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course is designed to give you the necessary skills to safely conduct open water dives. This course is the key to start exploring dive destinations around the globe or even in your backyard.

You have several options to complete the in-water phases of your training:

  • You can complete both the skill-development sessions and open-water training dives here at Lake County Divers Supply.
  • You may take the online eLearning course for the academic portion of the class.
  • You can complete the skill-development sessions here at Lake County Divers supply, and do your open-water training dives at the vacation destination of your choice.
Getting your entry-level diver certification is a three-step process:
  1. The first step is to acquire all of the important academic information every certified diver must know.
  2. This can be done in-class, here at LCDS, or online through SDI/TDI's eLearning Portal.
  3. The next step is to complete your in-water skill-development training.
  4. This takes place in a swimming pool or similar body of confined water. Here you will learn the fundamental skills that every diver needs to know. (It’s also a lot of fun.)
  5. The final step is complete four or more open-water training dives under the supervision of your SDI Instructor.
  6. Here you will apply what you have learned during your academic and skill-development sessions, while learning practical lessons that can only be gained through real-world experience in open water.

  • Minimum age 18, 15 with parental consent
  • Persons desiring to obtain a Scuba Diving certification
  • Persons interested in underwater exploration

The SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Course will cover all of the necessary skills and knowledge for open water scuba diving, including:

  • The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, heat loss, tides, currents, waves, surge, etc.
  • Physics and physiology: buoyancy, pressure, air spaces, breathing compressed air, mixed gases, etc.
  • Dive equipment selection, assembly, use and maintenance Dive planning
  • Basic scuba skills including mask and regulator skills, swimming underwater, buoyancy control, basic rescue techniques, and emergency procedures
  • And much more!

Students must bring their student workbook (Found in their Student Diver Kit). Rental equipment will be provided for each student attending the class. Students are required to supply their own Mask & Snorkel; if you do not have one, you may purchase one through the store. Class begins at 08:00 A.M. CST, with classwork running until noon, and pool-work afterwards.

Any student who takes the online eLearning course, should arrive around Noon CST.

Time will be alotted for breaks, with a lunch break between Class Time and Pool Time. Lunch is not provided by Lake County Divers Supply, so please plan accordingly (Although there will always be Coffee & Donuts in the morning!!)

Upon successful completion of the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver course, graduates may:

  • Conduct open water dives in conditions similar to their training
  • Continue their dive education by enrolling in SDI Advanced Diver and Specialty courses
  • Demonstrate mature and sound judgment concerning dive planning and execution
  • Satisfactorily complete the SDI Open Water Scuba Diver knowledge quests or equivalent online learning course
  • Complete all open water requirements safely and efficiently

*: Purchase of Open Water Course does not guarantee certification. The student must be able to complete all required skills, written testing, and check-out dives to receive certificaiton. Student may re-attempt certification until completion as needed, at no additional charge for the class. Certification is taught according to SDI/TDI standards and is globally recognized.

If student's wish to complete the classwork portion of the class on their own time, prior to the actual class, they may do so through SDI/TDI's eLearning Portal. Whatever option you choose, LCDS can help you with the arrangements.
